A letter from the owner and founder of Cutlers
Cove
Hi Knife Enthusiasts,
My love affair with knives started back in 1986. I was managing a
camera store in Austin, Texas. It was a small mom and pop type store in
which I did all the buying and ordering. I also received the merchandise
when it came in. I spent about 15 minutes one day looking for the box
cutter with no luck. It was then and there I decided I needed a pocketknife.
Later in the week I went looking for a knife. I found one in a
pawnshop down the street from the camera store. I had just discovered
pawnshops because one of the camera repairman in the camera shop had found
a Meade 6" astronomical telescope in the same pawnshop a short time earlier. I
purchased the telescope from him because it was just what I was looking
for. So I thought I would try my luck looking for a pocketknife in the
same pawnshop. I found a knife I liked. I didn't know much about knives
but the Schrade 3rd Generation 3-blade knife was just about what I needed
to open boxes at the camera store. It was in great shape and fit my pocket
well.
Regrettably I sold the knife later when I found what I thought was a
better knife. Plus back then I did not know you should have more than one
pocketknife. I now regret selling my first good knife. I may have
had knives when I was young, but I don't remember any. My Mom doesn't
remember me having any either, so that Schrade may have been my first
knife.
Now here it is many years later and I have been in the knife
business since I started selling and trading knives part time
in about May of
1991 in Austin, Texas.
Toward the end of 1991 I decided I liked selling
knives and I was going to do more of it. I set up as a dealer at my first
gun and knife show selling knives in November 1991 in Austin, Texas. I
started full time in this business on August 1, 1992 after moving to San
Angelo, Texas. So it started out as
a hobby and turned into a business a little over one year later.
The first "big" order of knives purchased to sell was
about $400.00 worth of the Parker Cutlery bankruptcy. This order was
placed in September 1991 and was the first of many purchased of his
bankruptcy. I ended up purchasing about $10,000.00 worth of the Parker
bankruptcy. Of course looking back now I wish I had mortgaged my house and
purchased $40,000.00 more. So, this is how I got started in the knife
business.
I enjoy doing research on vintage knives and learning about their
history. I consider their history to include manufacturing techniques, the
people that are involved with making fine knives and where they have been
made and are being made today. I
also appreciate quality design and craftsmanship. I really do not care
where a knife was made or when as long as it is quality. So I sum this up
as "Quality is quality no matter who made it or when it was
made".
For ten years (1992-2002) I drove around Texas, Oklahoma and
New Mexico going to gun and knife shows and knife only shows selling knives. I
averaged about 40
shows a year during this period. I
stopped going to shows and setting up to sell knives in April 2002 and the
last show was in San Antonio, Texas. Starting from this point back in 2002 all my efforts
and time have been on CutlersCove.com™,
CutlersCove.com Blog™ and
KnifeWebGuide.com™.

than I can list to
make our site a great resource for all knife enthusiasts. She has done a
great job and we thank her for the extra effort.
