Collins Machete with horn handles that is in very good condition. It is 20-1/2" overall and marked in four straight lines on the front LEGITIMUS COLLINS CO. HARTFORD No 18. The pommel is shaped like a elephant and on the back of the blade is marked S-2-25. The carved horn handle is cracked on the front side and is missing a small piece. The sheath is original and marked LEGITIMUS COLLINS CO. 5 and is missing the tip of the end as seen in the photo below. This old antique machete was made before WWII and definitely show signs of use. The blade is relatively full with some pitting and tarnish. The handle is known as Elefante with opening for wrist strap. The blade has two grooves or fullers, and it has been cleaned to the point that the tang marking is worn or faint on each side. The logo marking on this machete was used from 1890's to 1934 and has the five point crown with arm and hammer. The clip point blade is 15-3/4" long, which may have been originally 16" long. The Collins & Company was in business
1826-1966, near Hartford, Connecticut and they always had a reputation for high quality. LEGITIMUS
is Latin for genuine. All references above are from the wonderful book in
our collection
