Vintage Marbles Safety
Hatchet No 2 "Pocket Axe" Bakelite grips
Marbles Safety Hatchet No 5 "Pocket Axe" that is in excellent condition with very light use. Marbles Safety Pocket Axe is a light hatchet with a unique blade guard that folded into a recess in the handle, eliminating the need for a sheath. This one has been sharpened lightly and has some small hammer marks on the hammer head. Not sure of the date on the one we have but maybe before the 1950's. It is marked MARBLE'S GLADSTONE, MICH. USA NO. 5 on the rear of the head as seen below in both photos. Then on the safety cover arm it is marked MARBLE ARMS & MFG. CO. GLADSTONE, MICH. USA PAT'D 1898 as seen below in the second photo. It has the three hole handle and head. It is 10-5/8" overall and is still very tight and very usable. The cutting edge is 2-3/16" wide.

Recommended care: Never let the safety guard close without helping it cover the axe head. Close it slowly and do not let it snap shut. Keep a light covering of oil on the metal parts when in storage because it is mostly carbon steel. Never use a high speed grinder to sharpen the hatchet, sharpen slow with a Norton Axe/Hatchet Stone.
