Many domestic knives can be dated by a U.S.A. patent number which happens to be stamped on the blade. This number is the year the patent was granted and not the year the knife was made, but it does help give an approximate date range.

The following USA patent numbers can help you determine the approximate era of manufacture not the exact year:

The current USA patent numbering system began with a patent issued on July 13, 1836. Prior to that date 9,957 patents had been issued.

ZIP Codes started in 1965, but not all address information was updated in 1965 to carry zip codes. This information can help you determine the approximate era of manufacture not the exact year.
