San Angelo,
city, seat of Tom Green County, western Texas, on the Concho River; incorporated
1903. It has large wool, mohair, and livestock markets. Manufactures include
medical supplies, oil-field machinery, clothing, footwear, and communications
equipment. Angelo State University (1926) is here, and Goodfellow Air Force Base
adjoins the city. Bartholomew "Bart" J. DeWitt (1825-78) founded a
trading post here soon after the establishment (1867) nearby of Fort Concho (now
a museum). For the community that soon developed, DeWitt chose the name Saint
Angela, probably for his wife Carolina Angela. In 1884 the name was changed to
San Angelo. San Angelo is
located on the northern boundary of the Chihuahuan desert at an
altitude of 1,900 feet.
